Greece On Tuesday, two Pakistanis were arrested in the case of planning a terrorist attack. According to reports they were planning to target a Jewish restaurant, their aim was to target civilians at large.
Working together, the Israeli spy agency Mossad and Greek police have foiled an alleged plot to carry out a terrorist attack against Israelis and Jews in Greece. The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a statement that the two captured Pakistani nationals were part of an Iranian terrorist network.
Israel’s PMO said that the case exposed in Greece was a serious matter which was successfully foiled by the Greek security forces. This was an additional attempt by Iran to promote terrorism against Jewish targets in Israel and abroad. In Greece, after the investigation of the suspects began, the Mossad provided intelligence to uncover the infrastructure, its modus operandi, and its links to Iran.
The PMO further said in the statement that investigations have revealed that the terror infrastructure operating in Greece is part of a wider Iranian network operating from Iran and spread across several countries. Two unidentified suspects, aged 27 and 29, are reportedly being held at the police headquarters in central Athens. A third person is not in Greece.
Local media reports indicated that the target of the attack was the Chabad House, which includes a kosher restaurant and hosts other religious services. It is notable that the Pakistani terrorists who carried out the 26/11 attack in Mumbai had targeted the Chabad House in the Indian metropolis.
Greek police said the suspects had selected their target and were making final preparations for the attack. Greek police stated that their aim was not only to take the lives of innocent civilians, but also to undermine the sense of security in the country while damaging public institutions and jeopardizing (Greece’s) international relations. The two Pakistanis are said to be part of a wider Iranian network that operates from Iran and several other countries.
